The Story of Leatherback Studios

At first glance, our name is inspired by Leatherback sea turtles, one of the largest reptiles inhabiting the ocean. But the magic of our journey to becoming Leatherback Studios is in the details.

The vision for our brand started with a recollection of my childhood memories. I traveled to the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago every year to spend time with my grandma and uncle. Though I was born in the States, I spent my early years in Trinidad, bonding with my grandma as my mom established a life for us in America. After returning to the States, international family visits became a tradition rooted in love, sacrifice, and healing.

My most comforting memory is a family trip to Tobago. With my mom, grandma, and uncle, we traveled to Turtle Beach. It was the drive up the thrilling, steep roads to the lookout point where the sibling rivalry of the better driver was finally settled — a crown my uncle took (surprisingly) humbly. As we reached the peak, the calming blue waters graced our view.

The taste of the salt air and the brush of a tropical breeze were nothing compared to the joy I felt of seeing a Leatherback sea turtle for the first time. Watching the gentle giant find its way back into the ocean, I was intimidated by its size and strength but inspired by its determination.

I didn’t know then, but it would be our last family trip of four. We witnessed a powerful life lesson in hindsight and a moment that heightened my empathy and compassion for the world around me.

Through healing, the journey continues and becomes something greater.
